How to get rid of thousands of unwanted comments in few minutes

Few weeks ago I was helping a business owner to revamp his WordPress website. His site was built about 6 months ago and spam protection was never taken into account. When comments started pouring in he got pretty excited. Who wouldn’t? Comment likes “I tweeted this post! Thanks : )”, “Very neat article post. Want more.” and “Im obliged for the article. Really looking forward to read more. Fantastic” are built to boost our ego. He even approved some of them.

And then, before he knew it, he had thousands of comments in his pending bucket. That is when he called me. I have helped him install Akismet , the spam protection plugin, and set up some other parameters that will help him better manage comments in the future.

The one last detail to be taken care of was to remove more than 4000 comments in the unapproved bucket. Deleting those by using the standard WordPress user interface would take hours since it allows you to delete only 20 comments at a time.

So here is a tip of how to take care of the problem in just few minutes:

  • Install and activate the WP-Optimize plugin
  • Go to the WP-Optimize panel.
  • Check the “Clean marked Spam comments” and “Clean Unapproved comments button
  • Click the process button.
  • You may now deactivate the WP-Optimize plugin
