Updating your WordPress software, why and how

WordPress core software is being enhanced on a continuous basis. In 2015 there were at least 10 releases.

The latest one happened last week when WordPress version 4.4 was released

Should you upgrade your WordPress core version every time a new version comes out? The answer is YES and here is why:

  1. Server technology as well as core software such as PHP and MySql continuously evolves. (You have no control over it, especially if you are using shared hosting such as HostGator, BlueHost etc.) If you do not keep up, one day in the future your older WordPress version will no longer work with with a newly upgraded server. At that point upgrading will be a much more difficult task.
  2. New versions of WordPress often includes very important security upgrades that you want your site to have.
  3. And finally, the goodies, new and enhanced functionality the comes along with major releases

So how to go about updating, here are few tips:

  1. No rush. Wait at least a week after a version release before you install the new version. ( Let others find the bugs )
  2. Backup your entire site before you upgrade
  3. Check plugins compatibility.
  4. Make sure minimum requirements are still met by your server
  5. If you have several sites you may want to look at ManageWP , this is online free software that allows you to manage all your WordPress sites from one dashboard, keeping them updated and secure.
