The Dumbest Domain Name

Robot And Www AddressOne of the dumbest domain names I’ve registered was called, to-move-on.com. I’ll bet you can’t guess what the website business was about, and I don’t blame you. So let me give you the answer, because I know you can’t wait….my business was about real estate investment. The purpose of the website was to grab the attention of homeowners who were not able to sell their homes, and allow my company to purchase it, thereby providing them a way to move on. The topic of this article is Domain Names and not real estate, so let’s list the mistakes I made, so that hopefully you’ll learn from my mistakes, and get a domain name that’s appropriate for your business.

Keywords

A domain name containing keywords, which are used to target your key demographic in search engines, provides you with the perfect opportunity to immediately improve your ranking in different search engines. The more you match your domain name to your target keywords, the better it is for your website, in search engines results. In my case, SellMyHome.com would have been a better name for the company website. It would’ve been more likely to attract people who are considering selling their home and are typing the keywords “Sell My Home” into Google, Bing or any other search engine. In fact, a short investigation using Google’s Keyword Tool indicates that there are more than 2,400 searches done every month for the exact words “Sell my home.” Having said that, there are about 260 searches for the Keyword “to move on” every month, but I’m pretty sure these searchers are not looking to sell their home. This means, that the people who use these words are likely not my target market. As well, the domain name SellMyHome.com, is not exactly waiting for me to come along and grab it. In this case, I would have needed to choose an alternative, such as SellMyHomeFast.com which is available, or maybe SellMyHomeBC.com which is also available and includes the term BC (British Columbia). With BC in the domain name, it indicates that my business is located in BC, and allows me to qualify the visitors and contact requests I receive. In fact, a few months later I registered another domain called ForeclosureHelpBC.com, which target a very similar market. The first phone call I received was from somebody who found me on Google search, just a few days after my domain went online. As it turned out, the keywords Foreclosure Help BC, allowed my site showed up immediately on Google’s first page. Wow!! Better yet, this was also a client who was qualified for my demographic.

Make Sure the Domain Name is Easy to Say

In my article “How to pick a good domain name”, I recommended people pick a domain name that it easy to say. Imagine having to tell someone over the phone the domain name is, to-move-on.com. I would have been saying to them, “For more information, please visit “to hyphen move hyphen on”. Can you imagine the number of variations they would be checking, before they actually found my website; if they found it at all?  

Did I fall into the slogan trap? I sure did!

What was going on in my mind when I came up with this domain name?  I was thinking in terms of slogans. Cannot sell your home? Call Michelle and move on! This is a trap that many beginners fall into. Beginners tend to think that domain names like “LetMeSellYourHome.com” or “iamthebest.com” make sense. In fact, using names like these are exactly the wrong thing to choose. They’re much too generic and they completely fail to allow you to leverage the power of keywords, which are typically used by your market demographic. Why am I telling you this? Because, one of the biggest mistakes I see business owners making every day, is choosing the wrong domain name for their website. This ends up costing time, money and a lot of effort in the long run.
